A Southern Homemade Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Hey Y’all!

In this post I wanted to celebrate the holiday season  by making a Sweet Potato Pie. Even though  Thanksgiving  has passed, in the South a sweet potato pie can be made any time of the year. It’s the perfect southern dessert, it’s popular, and delicious. I’ve never met anyone that could turn down a piece of good ole sweet potato pie. Keep reading for the step-by-step recipe and the delicious finished product.

-5 Sweet Potatoes

-2 Eggs

-1 Stick of unsalted butter

-1 Cup of Sugar

-1 Cup of Whole Milk

-1/2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon

-1 Tablespoon of Lemon or Vanilla (whichever you prefer)

I began by using about five sweet potatoes, because I’ll be making two pies. Always remember to wash your sweet potatoes, before you get started.

Once you’ve washed your potatoes, put them in a large pot in order for them to  boil on high heat. I know that some people may bake their potatoes. However, I feel  you should always boil your potatoes, because when you bake them. You run the risk of losing a great deal of your sweet potato once you began to peel it for your pie.

After your sweet potatoes have boiled, and they are fork tender set them aside in a bowl. Allow your potatoes to cool a bit before you begin to peel them.

Once your potatoes have cooled, you can begin to peel the skin off of them.

After you’ve peeled your sweet potatoes, place them in a separate bowl. Chop your unsalted butter into chunks and add them to your potatoes. The unsalted butter should melt over the potatoes, because they are still warm.

Next, add in your 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and  a 1 tablespoon of vanilla or lemon extract.

Lastly, once you’ve added your dry ingredients. You can add in your 1 cup of whole milk, and 2 eggs.

Using a mixer, mix all of your ingredients together.

When you’ve  finished use a large wooden spoon to ensure, you have no lumps in your pie mixture.

Set your mixture aside to put your pie crust or crusts  in the oven. You can make your pie crust or buy them whichever you prefer. Cut about 4-5 slits in your pie crust, so the crust remains flat. Place the pie crusts in the oven for 325 degrees for about 10 minutes. This will ensure that the bottom of your pie crust will be done.

Remove the  pie crusts from the oven and allow them to cool. Then  begin to pour your pie mixture into your crust.

Use your wooden spoon to smooth out any lumps.

Next, place your pie or pies in the oven on 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are firm to the touch.

After you remove your pies from the oven you can set them aside and allow them to cool. One of the best things about sweet potato pie, it can be  eaten warm. Or you can put them in the refrigerator and enjoy them cold.

Either way I hope you enjoyed this recipe. Feel free to leave a comment and I hope y’all are having a wonderful holiday season so far!
