How to Make a Simple Old-Fashioned Blackberry Cobbler

Happy Friday Y’all!

Blackberry Cobbler is a popular, simple, and old-fashioned Southern dessert, that’s made from scratch. I was shopping in the grocery store the other day, and I saw some blackberries. My mouth began to water and I instantly had a flashback of picking blackberries with my cousins as a child. We used to walk the train tracks in Cayce, because that’s  where the best blackberry bushes were found. If you would like to read more about my childhood adventures, be sure to click here.

In this post, I’m sharing with y’all my Blackberry Cobbler recipe. There is nothing better than the sweet taste of blackberries swimming in their own juices, combined with a homemade  crust fresh out of the oven. I know that some people use biscuits, however I don’t want anything else soaking up those delicious juices from those plump blackberries, but my spoon.

This recipe is so easy and delicious, you’ll be asking yourself  “Why I didn’t I try this sooner?” So let’s get started on this traditional Southern dessert, so we can dig right in and enjoy it.

As always I’m sharing a list of ingredients, one is for the cobbler and one is for the homemade  crust.

List of Ingredients for a Blackberry Cobbler

-2 cups of fresh blackberries

-1 cup of sugar

-1 cup of water

-3 tablespoons of cornstarch

-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter (chilled)

-1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Ingredients for Homemade Pie Crust

-1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour

-1/2 cup of butter chilled and diced

-1/4 cup of ice water

-1/4 teaspoon of salt

 Fresh Blackberries or Frozen Blackberries

Personally, I feel like it’s all about your personal preference. I always like to bake with fresh fruits, whenever it’s possible. However, I’ve made it with both fresh blackberries and frozen blackberries, either way it’s delicious.

How to Clean Fresh Blackberries

It’s very important to wash fresh blackberries to ensure there is no dirt or other residue remaining on them. I put my blackberries in a colander and rinsed them on low pressure, because you don’t want to crush your blackberries. I washed and rinsed them a few times just to make ensure they’re clean. Allow them to drain in the colander for a few minutes and then put them in a separate bowl.

Prepping the Blackberries for the Cobbler

After you’ve washed your  blackberries, you can began prepping them for your cobbler.  You will want to slice your 2 tablespoons of chilled unsalted butter into small cubes.

Then,  you’ll add  your 2 tablespoons of diced and chilled unsalted butter, and 1 cup of sugar into the bowl with the blackberries. You may want to add a little more sugar, but that depends on the tartness of your berries.

In that same bowl, continue to add 3 tablespoons of cornstarch,  1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract,  and 1 cup of water.

Next,  fold the berry mixture over and allow the sugar to break down the juices from the berries. Once, you’ve added all of your ingredients together, you will let everything set in a bowl for about 30 minutes.

As your blackberries are marinating in their own juices, begin to butter your pan for your blackberry cobbler.

How to Make a Homemade Crust

As I mentioned earlier, I don’t like to use biscuits for my homemade blackberry cobbler. I like to use crust, which is super easy and quick to make. Or if you have a great deal of baking to do, you can use a store bought pie crust.

First,  you need to  combine 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon of  salt. Cut the  1/2 cup of butter chilled into small cubes.  Stir in 1/4 cup of water, one  tablespoon at a time.

Next, you will flour your counter top and being to roll out your crust with a rolling pin.

Making the Blackberry Cobbler

Once you’ve let your mixture set, you can pour  it into your buttered dish. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Then, begin to cut the crust  into squares, so you can overlap them onto your blackberries.

Continue to overlap your crust onto your blackberries, but be sure to leave spaces in between the crust. So the sweet juices  from the berries can bubble up through the cracks, it’s a Southern thing.

Then, brush your crust with melted butter.  When you’ve finished place your cobbler in the oven for 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
