How to Bake the ShortBread Cookie
for the Millionaire Bars
First, I’m going to begin by making a shortbread cookie, which is the base of this recipe. I’m adding in 2 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour into a mixing bowl.
Then, I’m going to add 2 sticks of room temperature butter into the bowl.
Next, add 1/2 cup of sugar to your butter and flour.
Then, you will use a hand mixer to mix your flour, sugar, and butter for about 2-3 minutes.
Once you’ve finished mixing, your dough should have this consistency.
Now, I’m going to cover a 9X13 inch pan with parchment paper, be sure to leave a little paper out on the sides.
Then, I’m going to simply place my dough onto the pan and press it down with my fingers.
After, I cover my pan with the shortbread cookie dough, I take a piece of parchment paper and smooth it out with my hands.
Then, I’m going to slowly pull the parchment paper off the cookie dough.
Next, I’m going to puncture holes into my dough with a fork, to ensure the dough bakes evenly. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and cook your cookie dough for 20-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
Once your shortbread is finished, it needs to fully cool because you will need to add hot homemade caramel on top of it.
**This next step is completely optional, I poured 1 cup of chopped pecans, over my finished shortbread after it has cooled.**
How to Make the Homemade Caramel
First, you will need a hard bottom sauce pan.
Then, you will place 1 1/2 stick of unsalted room temperature butter, 3/4 cup of sugar, 3 tablespoons of corn syrup, and 3/4 cup of condensed milk into your pan on a high heat setting.
Once your ingredients begin to bubble, turn the heat to a simmer and continuously stir for about 30 minutes to ensure your caramel doesn’t burn.
As your caramel starts to thicken and turn into a beautiful golden brown, replace your utensil with a whisk.
Continue to stir you caramel with the whisk.
Once your caramel is complete it will be a light golden brown.
When your caramel is finished you will immediately pour it over your shortbread cookie, that has been cooling in the pan.
You cannot wait until your caramel cools, because it will harden.
Then, you will take a butterknife and spread the caramel over the cookie and the pecans.
Melting the Semi-sweet Chocolate for the Millionaire Bars
We’re almost done, we just have to melt the chocolate.
Now, pour the entire 12 oz bag of semi-sweet morsels into a microwavable safe cup or dish. Then place it in the microwave on defrost for increments of 2 minutes. It takes about 6 minutes total to melt the chocolate and you will need to stir after every increment of 2 minutes.
Next, stir the melted chocolate in the cup or dish and prepare to spread it.
Now, that you’ve finished evenly spreading on the melted chocolate you can sprinkle coarse sea salt onto the nearly finished treat.
**The Sea salt is a completely optional step.**
You can place it in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes or until the chocolate hardens. Then you will cut it into bars, this recipe makes a total of 24 bars. However, you can make at least 48 if you want to make them smaller.
